As an agency that develops community leaders in the field of training and education, the Governing Institute of NJ acted upon the needs of the large numbers of immigrants entering New Jersey from Latin American countries by developing an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. GINJ is partnering with St. Peter Claver Church in Montclair, for their space and their contacts in the community for participants, and with the New School in New York for its ESL teachers. This program has doubled the number of participants in a short period of time due to the word of mouth by current participants. In September 2007 classes began at St. Peter Claver Church, 56 Elmwood Avenue in Montclair, NJ. The instructor, Kathy Zawacke, graciously volunteers for the Monday and Thursday evening classes held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each week through December 17, 2007. Registration for the winter series of ESL classes will be held on Monday, January 7, 2008 at St. Peter Claver Church at 56 Elmwood Avenue, Montclair at 7 p.m. For further information contact Clare Lagermasini, Executive Director of the Governing Institute of NJ, at 973-715-0734. Classes are free of charge, and the cost for materials is $25 with an option to pay $5.00 per week. |
